Three worked examples (US)

The calculator gives you a number; these show you where the number comes from. Each example takes one product from sale price to net profit, one line at a time, using the same US fee schedule the calculator runs on. The product assumptions — price, landed cost, inbound shipping — are representative figures stated in full so you can swap in your own; every fee is computed, not typed in.

1. Phone screen protector, 2-pack

Electronics · Small standard (≤ 16 oz) · referral rate 8%

A cheap, light accessory at the bottom of the price range. Low-price items look attractive because the referral rate on electronics is one of the lowest Amazon charges, but the flat parts of the fee stack — the fulfilment fee and the minimum referral fee — do not shrink with the price, so they are what decide whether the listing works at all.

LineHow it is worked outAmount
Sale priceListed price the buyer pays$9.99
Referral fee$9.99 × 8%−$0.80
FBA fulfilment feeSmall standard (≤ 16 oz) rate at this price−$2.95
Landed unit costWhat the unit cost you, delivered to your door−$2.60
Inbound shippingYour cost to send the unit into an Amazon warehouse−$0.40
Net profitSale price less everything above$3.24
  • Amazon's cut$3.75 (37.5%)
  • Net margin32.4%
  • ROI on cost125%

Watch the band edge. Amazon charges this product's fulfilment fee in price bands, and one ends at $9.99. Sell at $9.99 and the fulfilment fee is $2.95; sell one cent higher and it becomes $3.96. A price rise that small can cost you more than it earns.

Look at the two fee lines side by side: the fulfilment fee costs several times the referral fee, and it is on the same order as the goods themselves. That is the whole story of low-price FBA — you are paying a flat handling charge out of a very small number. Products at this price only survive when they are genuinely small and light, and the margin left over is thin enough that one returns spike or one competitor undercutting you erases it.

2. Insulated stainless steel water bottle, 24 oz

Home & kitchen · Large standard (1.75–2 lb) · referral rate 15%

The classic private-label mid-price product: heavy enough to sit in a parcel size tier rather than an envelope, priced where the standard referral rate applies in full. This is the shape most FBA businesses are actually built on, so it is the one worth being able to compute in your head.

LineHow it is worked outAmount
Sale priceListed price the buyer pays$24.99
Referral fee$24.99 × 15%−$3.75
FBA fulfilment feeLarge standard (1.75–2 lb) rate at this price−$5.82

Inbound shippingYour cost to send the unit into an Amazon warehouse−$1.10
Net profitSale price less everything above$7.52
  • Amazon's cut$9.57 (38.3%)
  • Net margin30.1%
  • ROI on cost111%

The two Amazon fees are comparable in size here, and between them they explain why a product sourced for well under half its sale price does not return anything like half its sale price in profit. Note the ROI line as well as the margin: margin tells you how healthy each sale is, ROI tells you how hard your cash is working, and a mid-price product usually reads better on ROI than on margin — which is exactly why margin alone is a poor way to pick products.

3. Collapsible storage ottoman

Home & kitchen · Large bulky (base, ≤ 1 lb) · referral rate 15%

A bulky, low-density item: cheap for what it is, but it takes up a lot of a truck and a lot of a shelf. Sellers routinely price these off the referral rate alone and are surprised by the result, because the fulfilment fee for oversize units is several times the standard-size one.

LineHow it is worked outAmount
Sale priceListed price the buyer pays$59.99
Referral fee$59.99 × 15%−$9.00

  • Net margin20.2%
  • ROI on cost51%

Oversize fulfilment is where the fee schedule stops being proportional: this unit pays several times the fulfilment fee of the small accessory above while tying up far more of your working capital per sale. Bulky goods can work, but they need either a higher price point or a much cheaper landed cost, and they punish you hardest on returns — the fulfilment fee is spent the moment the unit ships, refund or not.

What the three have in common

Phone screen protector, 2-pack$9.99$3.7537.5%$3.2432.4%
Insulated stainless steel water bottle, 24 oz$24.99$9.5738.3%$7.5230.1%
Collapsible storage ottoman$59.99$18.3530.6%$12.1420.2%

The fee load — Amazon's cut as a share of the sale price — is the column worth studying, and the point is that it does not simply rise or fall with the price. On the cheap accessory a flat per-unit fulfilment charge is coming out of a very small sale, so it dominates everything. On the bulky item that charge is far larger in absolute terms but is spread across a much larger sale, while the referral fee, being a straight percentage, grows in step with the price and never lets up. Two products with the same margin can have very different fee loads, and the one carrying the heavier load is the one that breaks first when you have to discount. Work the fee load out before the margin: it tells you what a product has to overcome before any of your own costs are counted.

These examples exclude storage, long-term storage surcharges, returns processing, advertising, and any account-level costs — the same boundaries the calculator has, set out in full on our methodology page. Fee figures come from the US schedule shown above and are recomputed on every build, so the arithmetic here always matches the calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Amazon charge to sell in US?

For most categories Amazon takes a referral fee of 15% of the sale price (a minimum of $0.30 per item), and with FBA you also pay a per-unit fulfilment fee. Enter your price above to see the exact total for your product.

What is the Amazon referral fee in US?

Most categories are charged 15% of the total sale price. Some categories differ — for example Electronics is 8%. Amazon also applies a minimum referral fee of $0.30 per item, so low-priced products pay at least that much.

How are Amazon FBA fulfilment fees calculated in US?

FBA fees are a flat amount per unit based on the item's size and weight, not a percentage. For the standard size tiers they currently range from about $2.95 to $9.35 per unit, and the exact fee also varies with the sale-price band. Larger or heavier items cost more.

Does this calculator include Amazon storage or subscription fees?

No. It covers the referral fee and the per-unit FBA fulfilment fee — the costs you pay on every sale. It does not include monthly inventory storage fees or the Professional selling-plan subscription, which depend on your storage volume and account type.

When were these Amazon US fees last updated?

These rates reflect Amazon's published US fee schedule as of 2026-06-27. Fees change over time, so always confirm against Amazon's official pricing page before relying on an estimate.
